Mission Project Name or Title:

Blood Drive: For God, For People, For a Change

What’s the need you’re meeting and why is it important to meet this need?

According to the American Red Cross, “Everyday 2 seconds, someone is in need of a blood donation”. We are also currently in the middle of a blood shortage in the United States. 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives.

What’s your specific project and idea to meet that need?

We plan to team with the American Red Cross and hold a Blood Drive at Valley Church. Our goal and hope is to have the community of Allendale and surrounding city’s attend and donate blood. We can utilize our time with the members of the community to spread God’s message, promote Valley Church, and let people know about other resources Valley offers (Diaper Store).

How will the grant money help your group do that?

Our group will utilize the grant for marketing via social media outlets (Facebook, Allendale Informed). Any extra money will be used for cookies, juice, other supplies not offered by Red Cross.

Does this project have the potential to be continued after the grant as a more regular mission project?

Yes. We could make this an annual event at Valley.

When will this project start and for how long?

We would want to host the blood drive in the Spring. We want to avoid scheduling our drive around the same time as other drives in the area. Our goal is to get as many people to Valley as possible.

Family Fun Day for the Allendale Community

What’s the need you’re meeting and why is it important to meet this need?

We want to throw a community gathering for families that do not have the money to go out to movies, dinner, arcades, etc. as a family. It is important to meet this need because spending time as a family, in simple way, is just as important as spending time together in more extravagant ways. Adrianna Eding and Shea Parmalee learned in class about: The Core and Balance Model of Family Leisure Functioning. This model is comprised of two categories of leisure: core and balance. Core leisure is the activities a family does on a day-to-day basis that does not require many resources (planning, money, time and effort). This may be all coming together to watch a television show or running through the sprinkler on a hot summer day. Core family leisure creates feelings of closeness, personal relatedness, and family identity and bonding. Balance leisure is the less common form of leisure that does not take place at home, such as going on a vacation or going out to dinner. Balance family leisure provides input necessary for families to be challenged to develop, adapt, and to work together as one cohesive unit. A family’s ability to adapt and be cohesive are chief components of healthy family function and wellness; therefore, families who participate in core and balance family leisure have a higher level of family functioning. It is important to participate in both categories of family leisure and not just one or the other. Taking part in both will supply a family with the skills, resiliency, and connectedness to adjust, adapt, or thrive when faced with life challenges (Zabriskie & Hanson, 2010). We want to help people to create positive family memories as well as create a greater family bond.

What’s your specific project and idea to meet that need?

We want to use Allendale High School’s auditorium to show a movie and use their gym to provide a variety of games that do not typically get played at home. We also want to have a restaurant or pizza joint cater the event so the family can eat something they don’t normally order for themselves.

How will the grant money help your group do that?

The grant money will allow for us to rent the facility, gather games, and hire a caterer for the event. It will also help us publicise the event.

Does this project have the potential to be continued after the grant as a more regular mission project?

I believe that this project should happen at least once a year, if not more than that. There are several times of the year that many families do not have the funds to provide special family time, for example Christmas break, Spring break, and Summer break.

When will this project start and for how long?

We would start this project ASAP and hopefully host the first Family Fun Day during Allendale Public School’s spring break in April.

Back-to-School Boutique

What’s the need you are meeting and why is it important to meet this need?

This is an outreach event promoting positive self image and empowerment of homeless and low income women and teens through donations of clothing in a boutique setting. We believe this need is important to help meet the financial needs and hopes with dignity and VIP treatment. Everyone’s story matters to God and we value the underdogs at Valley.

What’s your specific project and idea to meet that need?

We want to create a boutique style environment where the women and teens feel comfortable and confident accepting gently used clothing, friendly smiles and new friendships with dignity and grace. This includes but is not limited to merchandised items, hors d’oeuvres, music, dressing rooms, and volunteers to help with navigating the event. The timing of this event is designed to allow at risk and lower income high schoolers, college students, young professionals, and women/Mom’s of all ages to get new clothing for the Fall during a time when people would typically desire to go shopping for the upcoming school year/work year. In terms of execution, this project will include a collection of donations period, an organization of stock/prep period, the actual event, and a tear down period.

How will the grant money help your group do that?

The grant money will be utilized to supplement items that are not donated as well as marketing the event and pulling the event off. This could include but is not limited to food, purchased or rented items for displaying clothing (rolling racks, tables, etc.), full length mirrors, and equipment/supplies for the construction of the dressing rooms.

Does this project have the potential to be continued after the grant as a more regular mission project?

Yes, this could be an annual or seasonal project depending on foot traffic, amount of donations received, and overall success of the event.

When will this project start and for how long?

Late July/Early August ("back-to-school season")

Saturday from 11a-3p (set up Friday evening before, tear down Saturday after event)

Easter Egg Extravaganza

What’s the need you’re meeting and why is it important to meet this need?

For families with young children that aren't in a position to take part in normal Easter holiday traditions. The Easter holiday is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar, and while traditions like an egg hunt are not biblical, we have a similar goal as our mission to help students attend prom: we would like to help young children have similar Easter experiences as their friends do.

What’s your specific project and idea to meet that need?

We would like to help families in need by giving them the resources needed to host an egg hunt in their own home. These would be an egg painting kit, plastic eggs, and an assortment of candy to fill the eggs with (we will fill the eggs).

How will the grant money help your group do that?

The grant money would allows us to purchase the supplies necessary to host egg hunts.

Does this project have the potential to be continued after the grant as a more regular mission project?

This project has the potential to happen every year and for other holidays.

When will this project start and for how long?

We hope to advertise to families that utilize the diaper store (or have in the past) starting as soon as we know if we receive funding and have spoken with the Diaper store team.

This also offers an easy way to give the supplies to the families.

The 40's/50's Plus Go Group

Mission Project Name or Title

Double or Nothing!

What’s the need you’re meeting and why is it important to meet this need?

Upgraded sound equipment.

Why – Our current sound equipment is outdated and in desperate need of upgrading. Our music is an important part of drawing people to our church an we want to show our support to it.

What’s your specific project and idea to meet that need?
Our Go Group is willing to match the $250 which would give a total of $500 towards this need.

How will the grant money help your group do that?
It is the stepping stone to our willingness to commit additional funds.

Does this project have the potential to be continued after the grant as a more regular mission project?

No.

When will this project start and for how long?

As soon as we win :)
